Troubleshooting that matches real complaints
Drawn from TechSmith release notes and recurring user reports about scrolling capture, recording stability, hotkeys, licensing prompts, and antivirus interference.
Scrolling capture fails or cuts off the bottom
Users often report that automatic scrolling works briefly, leaves a black strip, or fails in certain browsers.
-
1
Confirm browser support
Scrolling capture is not supported in Safari on Windows or Opera. Switch browsers or use Custom Scroll.
-
2
Retry with Custom Scroll
When automatic stitching fails on complex pages, Custom Scroll gives you control of each advance.
-
3
Update to 2026.3.x
2026.3.0 fixed a crash when stopping manual scrolling capture. 2026.2.0 fixed crashes with very small selection areas.
-
4
Check virtual machines
Manual scrolling freezes have been reported on some VM graphics stacks. Test on bare metal if possible.
Video recording crashes or stops early
-
1
Meet the video CPU baseline
TechSmith recommends Intel 8th gen or newer, or AMD Ryzen 2000 series or newer, for video recording, plus about 8 GB RAM.
-
2
Update after toolbar crashes
2026.3.1 fixed a crash when showing the video recording toolbar. 2026.2.0 fixed multiple crashes when stopping recording.
-
3
Watch security software on Mac
Some antivirus tools stop screen recordings mid-session without warning. Add an allow rule for Snagit before long demos.
-
4
Keep the recording region on-screen
Moving a video region past the display edge has caused crashes in earlier 2026 builds.
Hotkeys stop working or start the wrong capture
-
1
Restart Capture and Editor
2026.3.0 notes hotkey regressions that updates addressed. Fully quit both Capture and Editor, then relaunch.
-
2
Separate image and video presets
Long-time users report accidentally starting video when they meant still capture. Assign distinct hotkeys and label presets clearly.
-
3
Check for conflicting apps
Other screenshot utilities and GPU overlays often steal the same shortcuts.
Library thumbnails missing or license prompts return
-
1
Large libraries
Libraries over about 5,000 items have shown unreliable thumbnails. Archive older captures or move the Library location if performance drops.
-
2
Activate after annual upgrades
Some users report the app installs quietly then later claims the trial expired because the new key was never entered. Open Help → About and confirm activation after each major install.
Antivirus warnings during install or recording
-
1
Verify the installer signature
On Windows, open file Properties → Digital Signatures and confirm the publisher matches TechSmith before allowing the file.
-
2
Compare file size and version
Current Windows builds are near 405 MB for 2026.3.1. Mismatched sizes against an unexpected version deserve a redownload.
-
3
Allow capture components deliberately
Hooks, WebView2, and the Snagit Printer can look suspicious to heuristic scanners. Create an allow rule instead of disabling protection entirely.
-
4
Read the trust page
See Trust & Security for malware clarification and user responsibility notes.
Best practices
- Use Smart Redact before sharing screenshots that may contain emails, account IDs, or tokens.
- Prefer Step Capture for multi-click procedures instead of dozens of manual grabs.
- Tag captures in the Library the same day so search stays useful months later.
- Keep a short video preset that opens in Snagit Editor and a separate preset for Camtasia when you need multi-track edits.
- After installing 2026.x, confirm you are on 2026.3.1 or newer so the July 2026 security fixes apply.
